Sri-Lanka is world renowned for both tea and spices as its microclimates make it possible to grow a wide array of them. However many do not know that Tamils built the foundation of Sri-Lanka's tea industry. In the 19th and 20th century, the British Empire brought Tamils from Southern India to work on central hill tea plantations in Sri-Lanka. Most of these workers were from Tamil Nadu who saw this as an opportunity for survival and a better future for their families. However, even though the British Empire abolished slavery, workers were subject to conditions of slavery such as poor housing, even poorer wages, and extreme work conditions. Today, workers hand-pluck and process nearly 675 million pounds of tea per year; the vast majority for export. Our scent THENEER, is a blend of black tea and spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves, and pays respect to the Tamil laborers that built the foundation of Sri-Lanka's tea industry.
